As springtime unfolds, flowering gardens\ngradually start to buzz. Beekeepers eagerly await\nthis moment, even if it is a time of abundant cares and\nconcerns: How have the bees fared through the\nwinter? Are they healthy? Do they have enough food?\nIs the queen bee<\/a> alive and well? Are there many first\nhatchlings? How can I help my bees along? And many\nmore questions... The bee hive is like a small\nworld or a large family. It\u2019s probably pretty\nevident, even to the non-beekeeper, that\nintrusions into family life are best kept to a\nminimum. So, how do you find that golden\nmean and help your bees welcome springtime\nin with an eagerness to begin working?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

To the hives in plain T-shirts<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, yes, you read it right. And no, not so that\nthey can sting you. A hive that is opened too\nfrequently loses heat, and the bees struggle to\nmaintain a stable temperature, which leads to\nincreased risk of disease and destabilizes family live \u2013 definitely not to the benefit of the bees.\nWould you like it if you were constantly plagued\nby cold gusts of wind just when you\u2019re beginning\nto move about and heating your home? So, it\u2019s\nbest to refrain from opening hives until you can\napproach them wearing just a T-shirt and no\nwinter coat (when the average air temperature is\n~15\u00b0C). This way you\u2019ll not only keep your bees\nwarm, you\u2019ll also not disturb their rhythm of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do not disturb or bother<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Bees are really pedantic. You can help them out\nby clearing away the dead bees at the bottom of\nthe hive and disinfecting it. That\u2019s it. There\u2019s no\nreason to stick your nose into the rest of their\nhome, pull honeycomb out or establish your own\norder. A careless visit from you might mean that\nthe bees will have to fix honeycomb cells and\nrepair their home instead of dedicating their time\nto rearing the next generation, preparing for the\nnectar harvest or, even worse, raising a new\nqueen bee because you\u2019ve hurt the old one. If\nyou really want to assess whether the bees have\nenough food, simply lift the hive up by its edges\nand evaluate its weight, comparing it with the\nother hives. If you come across a\ndisproportionately light hive, feed your bees.<\/span><\/p>\n

Food as medicine<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As the old saying goes, prep your sleigh in\nspring, and your bee food in autumn. Before winter comes along, you have to take care of\nyour bees\u2019 winter food stores and not disturb their\npeace during the cold season. In the early spring,\nbees are best encouraged with some inverted\nsugar syrup. These supporting feeds should be\nprovided every three days until the rapeseed\nfields begin to flower. This means about half a\nlitre of syrup twice a week. We also recommend\nsupporting your bees by providing them with\nprotein-enriched bee candy. However, keep in\nmind that this bee candy can only be given to\nbees that have taken their first flights and\nexpelled their waste. To bees that have not flown\naround and pooped, bee candy can be deadly \u2013\nthey will have diarrhoea and die. It's also worth\nknowing that bees that have already taken flight\nand begun to raise their hatchlings consume as\nmuch as 4 times more food.<\/span><\/p>\n

Health, the greatest treasure<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This applies to humans and bees alike. Disease\ncan reduce bee productivity, the raising of\nhatchlings or even destroy entire colonies. Varroa\nmites are especially dangerous to bees and do a\nlot of damage to their immune systems. We can\nonly be grateful that natural treatments for\nfighting parasites in the spring are available \u2013 we\nuse BeeVital.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the spring, when the bees begin to bring in\npollen and the weather is warm enough, treat\nyour bees with some BeeVital. Be sure to assess\nyour mite count \u2013 this is a must.<\/span><\/p>\n

Happy and productive bees are what\nbeekeepers dream of and work toward. Just\ndon\u2019t forget the most important thing: while\nbees do need a little assistance, very frequent\nintrusions into the hive destabilise their\nfamily life and do more harm than good. So\nhelp them along, but trust your bees to\nsurvive.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
