Everything that a queen bee<\/a> touches is special: her\nfood, her work, her lifestyle and even her character. Besides, every queen bee is unique. She\u2019s not called a queen bee <\/a> for nothing. And even though she might seem small compared to\nher entire swarm, the entire colony does her\nbidding. So without further ado, we present\nHer Royal Highness, the Queen Bee<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a look inside the hive. There, snuggling\nin their honeycomb cells, lie the bee eggs. It\nwon\u2019t be long before they hatch into starving bee larvae that will be watched over and cared for by\ntheir bee nurses. These little ones might not look\nvery sweet to us, but to the bee colony these are\nthe most adorable creatures that deserve royal\nfood \u2013 royal jelly \u2013 at least for the beginning. No\none knows how, but these worker bees select a\nfew special eggs from a multitude of others that\nthey place not in regular honeycomb cells, but\nsubstantially larger cells or chambers, and which\ngo on to become queen bees. The regular bee\nlarvae are fed royal jelly for 3 days, while the\nqueen larvae are given royal jelly almost twice as\nlong \u2013 for 5 days. The chosen one, unlike the\nregular larvae and bees, will feed on royal jelly for\nthe rest of her life. It is royal jelly that turns a\nregular larva into a queen bee with an active\nreproductive system, a larger body and the right\nto all the privileges of the hive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just as she hatches from her cocoon, Her Majesty the\nQueen Bee<\/a> begins her extraordinary life journey. Her\nfirst great task along the way \u2013 to mate. Having\nwandered among her subjects, inspected her\nhive and watched the waggle dancing of her\nworker bees, 7\u201310 days after hatching, the queen\nbee will leave the hive with a single purpose \u2013 to\nfind her mates. Because this flight will have to do\nfor the rest of her life, the young queen bee\nmates with 20 to 30 drones, and 12 days later,\nbegins laying her eggs and raising her new\nbrood.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another especially important duty of the queen bee<\/a> is\nto spread her good energy throughout the hive. After\nall, no one wants to encounter a bee that got out\nof the wrong side of the bed in the morning. Don\u2019t\nget the idea that being the ruler of a hive is easy\n\u2013 you might be constantly groomed, fed and\nrespected, but you can also be betrayed. The\nqueen bee can never rest easy \u2013 if productivity\ndrops among them, the worker bees can grow a\nnew queen of their own accord.\u00a0 And then it\u2019s\nsimply \u2018good bye my love, good bye\u2019. Or a fight to\nthe death. A truly royal existence. <\/span><\/p>\n

When food is abundant and the nectar harvest\nbountiful, bees tend to swarm. The old queen,\ninstead of fighting the new one, leaves the hive\nwith a part of her swarm. However, this tendency\ndepends not only on the strength of the harvest,\nbut also on the breed of bee.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though queen bees spend their entire lives\nsurrounded by vast multitudes of their offspring,\nwhen the time comes to say farewell, they often\nend up alone. Some die in the fight for their hive,\nwhile some die inside the hive or leave it\naltogether. No royal wake, celebratory handing\nover the crown or funeral \u2013 just concern for the\nnew mistress of the house.<\/span><\/p>\n

Buckfast queens<\/a> are born with a\nmission of their own \u2013 to raise a large bee colony that\nnot only harvests nectar but also pollinates crops and\nwelcomes in the garden harvest. Our planet is so\nhuge and so much depends on an insect\nscarcely several centimetres large \u2013 Her\nRoyal Highness, the Queen Bee. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
