Relocating bee\ncolonies<\/h1>\n

 <\/p>\n

The relocation of bee colonies is not as rare a\nphenomenon in the beekeeping world as one might\nthink. It helps farmers produce specialty honey,\nimprove honey harvests and add variety to the range of products produced by bees. With the right\npreparation, relocating hives will not only be\nuncomplicated, it can also be kind of fun. We\u2019ll\nshare with you how we relocate our bee colonies.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Advantages of relocating bees\"\u0161vie\u017eias<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

For the bees, spring and summer are the peak seasons.\nBeekeepers who wish to maximise their harvest, i.e.,\nensure a constant nectar harvest, send their bees on\n\u2018business trips\u2019 to different meadows every 2\u20133\nweeks, for approximately as long as the plants are in\nflower. Even though you can\u2019t tell bees what to do or\nwhat flower to land on, by relocating their hives to\ndifferent fields, you can produce specialty honey.\nHowever diligent they might be as gatherers of nectar,\nthey first harvest honey from the nearest fields, so if\nyou place a hive by a field of buckwheat, you\u2019ll have\nsome buckwheat honey, and if you place it by the\nwoods, your bees will make forest honey. Even if you\ndon\u2019t produce a pure specialty honey, at least the\ngreater part of the nectar will be gathered from the\nplants predominant in the area, and so their after-taste\nand nutritional properties will predominate in your\nhoney.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is hive relocation necessary if you want to produce\nhoney? It really isn\u2019t. Bees can gather nectar from\nfields within a radius of a dozen kilometres. You\u2019ll\ndefinitely have enough to sweeten your tea. But\nwouldn\u2019t you want to live closer to your workplace? Bees are no exception in this regard. The closer an\nabundance of nectar is, the more energy bees can\nspend on actually gathering nectar instead of\ncommuting to far-away meadows. Nectarful fields can\nbest be found by consulting with local farmers and\narranging for the temporary placement of hives on\ntheir land. After all, bees work themselves to death\nover their short lifespan of up to six weeks, so why not\nsave them at least a day of life?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Moving bees\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Bees like to move. Especially with their entire hive.\nWhen transporting bees to another location, you really\nneed to be careful and respectful, because a hive is full\nof tens of thousands of capricious bees \u2013 anger them at\nyour own risk. Besides, reckless behaviour can cost\nthe lives of some of your bees and even the queen bee\nherself. So before moving your bees for a week or\ntwo, make sure to prepare meticulously well.\nPreparations are best left to the evening before the\nmove. Before you begin to relocate your bees, extract\nthe existing honey harvest from the hive, so that the\nbees have room for new stores of honey, and set new\nand empty honey supers up in the hive. Because bees\nlike comfort, we set up an \u2018air conditioner\u2019 for them \u2013\nattaching a screen to improve airflow at the top and\nbottom of the hive. Lastly, for our safety and theirs,\nwe secure the hives with fastening straps and wait for\nthe early morning hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

Relocate the bees before dawn \u2013 after all, we want all\nmembers of the family to be at home. So that the bees\ndon\u2019t come out to explore the car or introduce\nthemselves to their \u2018relocators\u2019, close the entrances to\nthe hive before loading it into your vehicle. Also\ncomplete the second stage of \u2018conditioning\u2019 by\nspraying the bees with water. Bees are used to being\ntheir own vehicles and navigators, so your driving\nskills might make them stressed. Besides, when\nquarters are so close inside the hive, the bees can\noverheat quickly, and the likelihood of wax melting\nand a portion of the bees dying along the way\nincreases. The screen for airflow and water spraying\nwill protect the bees and also give them something to\ndrink \u2013 all the conveniences they could need under one\nroof. Once you\u2019ve made the necessary preparations,\nload the hives so that the hive frames are\nperpendicular to the axles of the vehicle \u2013 this will\nprotect the bees from being squashed \u2013 and it\u2019s finally\ntime to step on the gas pedal. Bees are great trackers. In order to comfortably move\nthem to a different location and prevent them from\nlooking back, you\u2019ll have to travel beyond a 4 km\nradius. We recommend moving up to 25 bee colonies\nto the new location. When erecting the hives, it\u2019s\nimportant to remember that bees, much like other\nanimals, live and work according to the laws of nature.\nIt is best that entrances are turned towards the east, so\nthat the bees wake up with the first rays of sunlight \u2013\nthis will improve their mood and their nectar harvest.\nAnd finally, it\u2019s important to take care of anyone that\nmight wander in to the territory of the relocated hives by setting up an informational stand with your bee\nfarm\u2019s contact information, and inform the State Food\nand Veterinary Service of the hives\u2019 new location.<\/span><\/p>\n
