If one ever meets a fellow Lithuanian deep in\nthe German mountains, the first thought to\ncome to mind is that this is a mountaineer, a\nbotanist or a wild adventurer. However, few\nwould think that this might be a beekeeper\nthat made the trip with a specially-prepared\nvan all the way from Lithuania. And not on his\nown, with a whole entourage of mini nucleus\nhives full of young, day-old queens and their\nroyal attendants. As Vilius, the beekeeper in\nquestion, quips, they have arrived for a\nwedding \u2013 at a bee mating station 700 m\nabove sea level. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Distance is no obstacle<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A little over 1.5 thousand kilometres to the\ndestination and back just as many. Twice. Let\u2019s\nbe honest here, you have to be slightly crazy to\nmake such a trip and with a host of buzzing\npassengers to boot. However, the trip isn\u2019t all that difficult, say the sibling beekeepers Ignas and\nVilius Jackevi\u010dius, if you\u2019re prepared and have a\ngoal. For the convenience of the bees, the travel\nvan was equipped with special cooling equipment\n\u2013 a conditioner for the bees that ensured a\njourney that was safe, comfortable and caused as\nlittle stress as possible. And the end result, the\nfruits of which the beekeeping brothers are\nquietly happy about, made all the trouble worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The search for the ideal bee\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The young beekeepers were drawn to Germany by their love for their work, the search for the ideal bee and the goal of becoming the best, most advanced and science-based contemporary beekeepers and breeders around. Currently, the twins are behind one of the few Lithuanian beekeeping enterprises not only breeding but selling their home-grown pure-bred Buckfast queens<\/a>. Because queen bees<\/a> are born with half of their chromosome set from their father and half from their mother, they had to mate their Buckfast queens<\/a> with Buckfast drones \u2013 something that would have been impossible in Lithuania, where there are no mountains or islands. At the mating station in the German mountains, 700 metres above sea level, only Buckfast bees are bred, and no other bees inhabit the area within a radius of 20 kilometres. This ensures the purity of the breed and the preservation of its characteristic qualities. Only such queen bees<\/a> can be used for breeding, finding the ideal bee with the best qualities and entrenching its gene pool.<\/span><\/p>\n

Buckfast bees \u2013 a beekeeper\u2019s dream\"motin\u0117li\u0173<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

No other breed of bee was so sought after by the\nbrothers as the Buckfast bee. They say they are\nperfect: clean, peaceful and friendly, almost\npurring like kittens when stroked. Apart from their\ngentle tempers, they are productive gatherers of\nhoney and builders of strong colonies that aren\u2019t\ninclined to swarm or cause other kinds of\nmischief. The beekeepers will monitor and breed\nthe queen bees that were successfully mated at\nthe mating station \u2013 only the very best queens\nwill be assigned to rearing new Buckfast queens,\nwhich in turn will be sent off to honeymoon in\nGermany as well. The queen bees they breed are\neither used at the Broli\u0173 Medus bee farm or sold\nto other beekeepers who have an appreciation for\nthe breed or are novices, for whom the bees\u2019\ndocile temperament is especially important.<\/span><\/p>\n

If all this trouble and slight insanity seems\nstrange to you \u2013 don\u2019t worry: the beekeepers\nthe brothers encountered in Germany were\nalso surprised to see a couple of Lithuanians\nat their mating station. They were surprised\nand delighted and even asked to be\nphotographed together. For it\u2019s a rare thing,\nmuch like meeting a grizzly bear in the\nLithuanian woods.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
