In order to create a swarm artificially, you have to\nsweep out 2 kilograms of bees from the honey\nchambers. We recommend sweeping bees from 3 to 4 hives. The most convenient time for this Sweeping away part of a colony will benefit both the\nbees and the beekeeper: very large colonies tend to\nswarm during an abundant harvest, so sweeping away\nsome of the bees will help preserve the honey harvest\nand the queen bee as well as safely and conveniently\nestablishing a new bee swarm in an area that offers an\nabundance of nectar.<\/span><\/p>\n Preparing the hive<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Much like with every family, colonies need a home\nthat is suitably prepared: a place that provides plenty\nof delicious and nutritious food, offers sufficient\nspace, good airflow and is safely constructed. This is\nexactly the type of home we create for our bees. For\nthem, there is no better home than a clean and\nspacious hive. In the new hive, we close off the main\nentrance and prepare safe structures for them to\ninhabit \u2013 six brood chamber frames lined with wax\nfoundations that they can turn into honeycomb.\nThough many don\u2019t believe this to be true, placing real\nwax foundations helps create a cleaner hive less prone\nto disease. At the end of each frame, we place a hive\ndivider and secure everything in place so that the\nframes stay in place when transporting the hive. In\norder to make this new home more hospitable, we\nmake sure to leave the bees some food at the bottom of\nthe hive \u2013 1.5 kg of bee candy (a special dough made\nof honey and sugar specially for feeding bees). We are now close to having a hive prepared for bees to move\ninto. Home wouldn\u2019t be home without the main guarantor of family welfare \u2013 a mother. A mated queen bee must be placed inside the hive<\/a>. In order to ensure that the\nbees accept their new queen and prevent them from\nsentencing her to death, we need to make the queen\nbee\u2019s pheromonal smell less potent. The miracle of\nwater will once again provide us with a fitting solution\n\u2013 so spray her majesty\u2019s chamber with it.\nCongratulations! You have only one last thing to take\ncare of before letting your bees establish themselves:\nopen the door and place the queen\u2019s cage into the hive\nbetween the frames. When the attendant bees eat\nthrough the bee candy and enter the hive along with\nthe queen, they\u2019ll begin the process of establishing and\nstrengthening their colony.<\/span><\/p>\n From different hives to one colony<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n A well-prepared hive does not yet guarantee that a\ncolony will come together successfully. Bees are very\nclever. They can find their way home from distances\nof a dozen kilometres, so making them accept the new\nhive and a new set of colleagues will require some\nknowledge and resourcefulness. But first, let\u2019s let the\nbees settle into their new home. Generously spray the\nbees in their special container with water and shake\nthem out into the hive, covering it with the breathable\nscreen as quickly as we can. Strap the hive down for\nsecure transportation. You might find it useful to mark\nthe queen\u2019s information down on the side of the hive,\nincluding lineage, year and ID number.<\/span><\/p>\n And now the time has come for a little trick. To make\nsure that the bees don\u2019t simply find their way back to\ntheir former homes when we open the hive entrance,\nwe need to erase their memory. Sound like a scene\nfrom a sci-fi movie? No, we won\u2019t be using a magical\ndevice. Truth be told, we won\u2019t be using any kind of\ndevice. In order to let the bees get used to their new\nhome and forget their old one, we\u2019ll place this hive in\na cool dark place for 3\u20134 days. This period of time\nwill be an important factor in the development of a\ntight-knit family \u2013 not only will the bees forget their\nformer residence, they will also make friends with\ntheir new family and the new queen. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n After this memory-erasing procedure, in the evening,\ntransport the bee colony<\/a> to its new permanent location,\nopen up the entrance and spray those miraculous 2 kg\nof bees with some organic BeeVital treatment against\nmites. After a day, check to make sure that all is right\nin the hive: the bees are calm, the queen has been\naccepted and the honeycomb is nearly finished. To\nstrengthen the colony, place a feeder on the hive and\nfill it with 1 litre of sugar and water syrup (at a ratio of\n1:1) in the evening. \u00a0That first gulp of syrup will be\ngreater because the hive barely contains any food\nstores at first.
