If you think that bees simply add more wax to the wax\nfoundations you\u2019ve provided them with to build\nhoneycomb cells \u2013 well, you\u2019ve got the wrong\nimpression. An experiment was once conducted with a\nfoundation of green wax. It turned out that the bees\nrecycle the wax from the foundation itself to build the\nhoneycomb, only using minimal amounts of wax\nproduced by their own selves. Bees only need to make\nabout 30% of the wax themselves, while the remaining\n70% they repurpose from the wax foundation. So, if\nwe really want to save our bees\u2019 time and effort, we\nshould be using quality wax foundations. <\/p>\n
\nQuality foundations \u2013 not for the convenience of\nthe beekeeper<\/strong>
\nToday, the market offers a myriad of wax foundation\nproducts. Unfortunately, not all of them qualify as\nhigh-quality products because they can\u2019t effectively be\nrepurposed by the bee colony. The most frequently\noccurring additive is paraffin wax. Real wax\nfoundations are very brittle (especially in colder weather), and cutting them or placing them in a frame\ncan be a real challenge. In order to understand the\nmain difference between natural wax and paraffin\nwax, try pouring a little bit of one and the other in as\nthin a layer as possible on the surface of a table.\nWhich substance do you think will be easier to\nremove? Real wax will simply crumble.\u00a0 Wax\nfoundations that are this fragile are made of one\nhundred percent beeswax... A foundation that has a\nhigh paraffin content is much more fun for the\nbeekeeper: it\u2019s bendy and easy to tailor. However, for\nthe bees, it\u2019s not much of a help because they can\u2019t\nwork the paraffin wax, which means that they\u2019ll have\nto make their honeycomb entirely out of wax they\nmake themselves.
\nQuality foundations accelerate nectar gathering\nand colony development<\/strong>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0If wax foundations contain additives, bees will\nwaste substantial amounts of time on honeycomb\nconstruction, delaying their nectar gathering activity\nand the development of the entire colony. Whereas\nwith real wax foundations, their honeycomb building\nis done in no time and they can begin bringing nectar\nin without further delay. The best option is to have\nyour wax foundations made by craftsmen you know\nwell and can rely on \u2013 and only from your own wax.\nThis way, you\u2019ll get the best possible quality and also\nprotect your colonies from the diseases that sometimes\ncome with wax.
